Seniors John Hoffman and Noah Deitrick were named 2017 National Merit Semifinalists for their high scores on the PSAT, which they took in October of their junior year.

Hoffman and Deitrick were among six Walla Walla High School students to be recognized in April of 2016 as high scorers on the test, but are the only ones to advance to the next level. Nationally, approximately 16,000 students were selected as semifinalists, out of 50,000 high scorers. Of the semifinalists, 15,000 will qualify as finalists, and half of the finalists will become National Merit Scholars.

Seniors Cameron Peters, Hannah Cabasco, Amelia Mott and Stella Gryler failed to advance, but may still be recognized as Commended Students later in the month. Commended Students do not have the opportunity to advance in the competition, but they may be eligible for other scholarships. More than two-thirds of the high scorers will be commended.
